太平洋戦争の末期の沖縄戦は、アメリカ軍が圧倒的な戦力で1945年4月1日に沖縄本島中西部から上陸した。1945年5月23日からの首里攻防戦後に、その周辺には多数の日本軍兵士の死体が散在していた。アメリカ軍兵士が、多数の日本軍兵士の死体の検死を確認していた。6月23日には日本軍本部が壊滅して、アメリカ軍は嘉手納基地で終結の星条旗を掲げた。
