76年前の日本時間1941年12月8日に宣戦布告の直前に、太平洋戦争の緒戦となった日本軍による真珠湾攻撃が、ハワイ準州オアフ島のアメリカ海軍の基地と艦隊に対して奇襲をした。アメリカは12月11日にはドイツ・イタリアにも宣戦をして地球規模の第2次世界大戦に参戦する口実となった。アリゾナ戦艦は日本空軍から膨大な空爆をされて、アメリカ軍兵士1,177名のうちに1102名が戦死して沈没した。その他に戦艦8隻と船舶13隻も沈没した。
