フィリピンは、1896年からスペインの植民地から独立運動をした。スペインが1989年5月1日を敗北するも、アメリカ合衆国が植民地とした。アメリカ軍はフィリピン人の独立運動を掃討すめため、1902年までに少なくとも約20万人を虐殺した。1900年11月にはフィリピン人市民に対しても殺人、強姦、水責めなどの残虐も行われた。アメリカ軍は降伏している無抵抗のフィリピン人捕虜も連行して、銃殺してはちの巣になった死体を塹壕などに散在した。
