クメール・ルージュにより1975年5月13日にポル・ポト政権が樹立し、国号がカンプチアに改名された。カンプチアの約4割におよぶ約200万人以上もの市民の大虐殺された。犠牲者は女性や子供までに及んだ。ベトナムは軍事介入するも1979年2月17日には中国と直ちに軍事衝突して大虐殺は秘密裏にされた。熱帯林に埋もれた白骨の山だけでなく、犠牲者はプノンペン市内の元高校内でも見出された。
