ナチス・ドイツ軍は1939年9月1日に、ソ連軍が9月17日にポーランドに侵攻して第2次世界大戦が勃発した。ドイツ軍は、直ちにユダヤ人とポーランド人あわせて約87,000人が、ポーランド占領地域からワルシャワなどの各都市のユダヤ人街へ送致した。囲い込みから送致して絶滅を目指す大量虐殺のホロコーストを実施した。1939年9月11日に、ナチスドイツ軍が抹殺した死体を、ポーランドのワルシャワで露天墓地に集積して山積みにした。
