ナチス・ドイツは1939年7月1日に、ソビエト連邦が9月17日にポーランドに侵攻した。9月3日には、イギリスとフランスが相互援助条約で宣戦布告して第2次世界大戦が勃発した。ナチス・ドイツ軍兵士は、1人のドイツ軍将校の殺害の容疑で、多数のポーランド人を死刑に処した。ドイツ人の死亡に対する報復として死刑にするポーランド人の比率は、100倍以上の人数に達した。ナチス・ドイツ軍は、市民と軍人も無差別に根絶して民族浄化するためにポーランド人を処刑して大量虐殺した。
