インドのラジブ・ガンジー首相らは、タミル人系のスリランカ新政府組織(LTTE: Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam)に干渉して、1987年にインド軍を進駐させた。シンハラ人系のスリランカ政府が、約3割のタミル人を殺戮して紛争が勃発していた。タミル人が出移民したタミルナドゥ州の南マドラス近郊で、1991年5月21日に遊説中に爆弾テロの犠牲となった。タミル人女性がタミル・ガンジーに最敬礼して足に触れた瞬間に自爆した。頭部が吹き飛ばされて46歳で即死させた。
