東京大空襲により、1944年11月24日から1945年8月15日まで、東京の都心は118回の空襲を受けた。来襲した航空機は約4,317機、投下爆弾11,642発、投下焼夷弾389,241、死者は約95,966名と負傷者は70,971名に及んだ。B-29から投下された焼夷弾により、火事嵐が起き、全ての人も物も、生命と財産を、焼失した。母がちぎれかかった娘の幼児を抱えながら、共に焼け死んだ。それらの死体は、完全に焼け焦げて黒化して硬直したままで散在していた。
