第2次世界大戦の北アフリカ戦線で、エジプト北部のエル・アラメインの激闘からドイツ軍は撤退した。ドイツ軍兵士は、北アフリカ砂漠を自転車に乗って西に向って、沿岸道路にて走行していた。ドイツ軍隊に追いつく直前に、イギリス軍の狙撃兵に狙われて悲惨にも銃殺された。自転車からドイツ軍兵士の死体は砂漠に上向きに転倒した。ドイツ軍は、エル・アラメインの前に勝利が有り、後に敗北が有りで悲惨な撤退となった。
