イスラム国(IS)は、離散の月であるシャイバン1日目の2017年5月26日にカイロ南部のカリフ砦のIS兵士たちは、ヒルワン地区の警察捜査部に乗っていた8人のバスを攻撃し虐殺した。テロ全体では28名死亡し20名以上が負傷した。ISはエジプトが攻撃を強化したシナイ半島にも戦闘員を浸透させた。ISは米国軍など有志連合の攻撃で、シリアやイラクで劣勢が続き、テロの攻撃範囲を拡大した。
