日露戦争において、中国の遼寧省の東北部で両軍による激烈な遼陽会戦が勃発した。日本約13万人でロシア約22万人による戦闘で、甚大な死傷者となり日本は約2万2千人、ロシアは2万5千にも達して、日本軍が侵略した。日本軍が特に激戦となった首山堡南高地で1904年9月1日に塹壕の中の多数の戦死者を収容した。白兵突撃させ首山堡を確保させ戦死した橘周太を美談と英雄に祭り上げて正当化した。
