太平洋戦争にて、サイパン島で日本軍とアメリカ軍と1944年6月15日から7月9日までの激しい戦闘により膨大な戦死傷者が出た。日本兵士や在留日系市民らはサイパン島の最北端のプンタン平原の通称バンザイクリフの岬に追い込まれた。アメリカ軍の投降勧告を聞き入れず、悲惨な恐怖と玉砕に洗脳され飛び込み自殺をした。約80m下の断崖の海岸は真赤に染まり死体で埋まった。
