スペイン内戦が1936年7月から1939年3月まで勃発した。左派の人民戦線と右派の反乱軍が戦闘した。当初の1936年7月19日には、バルセルナでは反政府軍を鎮圧したスペイン人住民らが犠牲者となった。人民戦線はわずかなソ連・メキシコ・義勇軍らしか支援がなかった。最終的には、ドイツとイタリアが参戦したフランシスコ・フランコの反乱軍が勝利して、内戦が終結して独裁政権となった。
