イラク軍がクルド人に対して1988年3月16日にハラブジャにて化学兵器である不詳な毒ガスにより、多数の住民が虐殺された。その毒ガスでクルド人の母親とその子供が死亡した。第1次世界大戦でドイツ軍が初めて毒ガスを使用し、大戦後残酷なために毒ガス等の化学兵器を禁止したジュネーブ議定書が国際連盟で1924年10月5日に採択されていた。
