太平洋戦争にて、アメリカ軍はマリアナ諸島のサイパン島に1944年6月15日から7月9日まで侵攻して、日本軍は全滅した。アメリカ軍は、大兵力の武力と物量などで日本軍を圧倒した。日本軍も民間人も砲爆撃などで、北部に追い詰められて、海にも飛び込み自決した。日本軍兵士が末期にサイパン島の波打ち際にうつぶせになり戦死していた。
