太平洋戦争にてサイパン島の戦闘で、日本軍兵士は追い詰められて「天皇陛下万歳」と叫びながら、アメリカ軍に全滅突撃した。その地域には日本軍は4,301名もの戦死した遺体が散在した。日本軍兵士はタナバクの海岸へ突撃するも、一夜明けると死体の山となった。
