太平洋戦争においてフィリピンのレイテ島に取り残された日本軍兵士は、1944年10月20日に上陸したマッカーサー司令官のアメリカ軍と終戦まで残酷な戦闘で全滅した。アメリカ軍兵士は、密林の中でどぶ池に倒れた3名の日本軍兵士の遺体を引き上げて検証した。日本軍兵士は補給も武器も食糧も絶えて餓死も含めて約8万人もレイテ島で戦死した。
