日本は朝鮮に侵攻して日清戦争の勝利した後に、1910年8月29日に韓国併合した。それに対抗して、1919年3月1日から独立運動が勃発した。農民による独立と自衛組織であった馬賊が、朝鮮と国境に接する満州で間島の琿春を1920年9月に侵攻した。日本軍は鎮圧するために、馬賊であるとした多数の朝鮮人農民を斬首して処刑した。
