The Japanese army massacred the numerous villagers in Kota Bharu on the Malay Campaign landing at the beginning of the Pacific War.

日本軍は、最初のイギリス軍の緒戦として1941年12月8日にマレー半島の侵攻を開始した。イギリス領の東北端のコタバルを強襲して上陸した。バリティンギ村領域内の支那人は抗日分子として住民を含めた約600名を日本軍は1942年3月16日に大虐殺した。その犠牲者の遺骨が発掘されて、村民の遺族たちにより墓地に埋葬された。
