太平洋戦争にて、アメリカ軍はクウェゼリン環礁北部のロイ・ナムル島を1944年2月14日には日本軍を1日間の戦闘で制圧した。全滅する戦闘の玉砕のために、生き残る日本兵士は塹壕で自決した。右軍足を取り、銃を胸に向け、右親趾で引き金を引いて自殺した。
