太平洋戦争の沖縄戦にて、日本軍は1945年5月24日にアメリカ軍によって占領された飛行場に対して絶滅する特攻攻撃をした。読谷と嘉手納飛行場に向けて、熊本から136名が離陸した。一部は不良で帰還して、一部のみが胴体着陸できて多少の損害を与えて、69名の日本軍の死体が検証された。
