第2次世界大戦にて、1994年12月16日から25日までベルギーの南東部にてバルジの戦闘にて市民も巻き込まれて膨大な犠牲者を出した。ベルギーの東部のマルメディにて、多数のアメリカ軍兵士だけでなく市民もドイツ軍の虐殺により犠牲者となり、その遺体の身元が検証された。
