第1次世界大戦において、1914年9月にベルギーを侵攻したドイツ軍を、9月4日にフランス軍がセール川の支流のマルヌ河畔で会戦をした。包囲されたドイツ軍は9月9日にエーヌ川に向けて全面撤退して、短期から長期戦の塹壕戦に至った。フランス軍の砲撃により、ドイツ軍兵士は塹壕の中で悲惨にも爆死した。
