韓国で1991年4月から韓国で、ソウルで大学生が盧泰愚の軍事政権に対してデモ中に、警官に殴られて死亡した。それに対して韓国中の約60大学で抗議集会が開催された。この事件で7人が焼身自殺して、うち6人が死亡した。光州市では、1991年4月29日に女子学生が抗議の焼身自殺をした。
