第2次世界大戦後にドイツから周辺にも散在していたナチス・ドイツの強制収容所を解放した。大戦中に強制収容所で凄まじく虐殺された者は合計で約1,000万人以上であり、ユダヤ人はその内約600万人に及んだ。放置されていた無数の死体の中には、やせ細った多くの子どもたちも含まれていた。
