太平洋戦争にて、1943年11月21日から11月23日にギルバート諸島タワラ環礁のペティオ島で、恐怖と悲劇の激戦となり日本軍は全滅し、アメリカ軍海兵隊員も多数の死傷者を出した。放置されたアメリカ軍海兵隊員の死体と日本軍兵士の死体を取り囲みながら、激戦を避けて海兵隊員が待機した。
