第1次世界大戦の西部戦線において、フランス北部のソンムで最も凄惨な戦闘となった。連合国と同盟国で戦争者は約100万人にも及ぶも、無謀な一進一退で終結した。機関銃と戦車により塹壕戦となり、政治宣伝のため1916年10月8日にフランス軍とドイツ軍兵士の両者が接近した戦死をフランス新聞に掲載した。
