太平洋戦争において、日本軍はニューギニア島の東部のブナ海岸に1942年7月2日に攻略した。アメリカ軍がブナ海岸に11月14日から1943年1月22日まで侵攻して厳しい死闘となり日本軍は壊滅した。その翌日まで戦闘をした日本軍兵士がアメリカ軍兵士にブナ海岸で射殺された。
