第1次世界大戦は1914年6月8日にオーストラリアの皇太子がボスニアのサラエボでボスニア系セルビア人に暗殺されたセラエボ事件から勃発した。オーストラリア帝国は7月8日に独立国セルビアに、同盟帝国であったドイツ帝国は対抗するロシア・フランスに宣戦布告した。セルビアとオーストラリアの国境付近では、オーストラリア帝国軍はセルビア人捕虜を大量に銃殺した。
