朝鮮戦争は、北朝鮮軍が1950年6月25日に北緯38度戦を越えて侵攻して勃発した。6月28日にはソウルが占領され、7月17日に韓国は釜山まで撤退した。8月12日に米軍が仁川より9月26日にソウルを奪還した。ソウル占領から奪還までに、多数の一般市民は北朝鮮に反動と不協力分子として無差別に虐殺された。国連軍と中朝連合軍が1953年7月23日に38度の軍事境界線で休戦協定した。
