The US military buried many Japanese soldiers killed with bulldozers and accumulated into the graveyard.

太平洋戦争においてパプアニューギニア東部のソロモン諸島の最北端に位置するブーゲンビル島は「墓島」と称さるほどの激戦地で多くの日本兵が戦死した。アメリカ軍が上陸した1943年11月1日から終戦後の1945年8月26日まで戦闘した。アメリカ軍は戦死した多くの日本兵の死体をブルドーザーで穴を掘り墓場に集積した。
