ウクライナはロシア帝政との内戦と干渉から1919年にウクライナ労農臨時政府から社会主義ソビエト共和国が独立して、ソビエト連邦と軍事同盟を締結した。ウクライナの内戦と集団農農業政策するも、1921年にはヴォルガ地域は大規模で深刻な飢饉となった。大飢饉のために人食いをした残りの人肉とを保持していたウクライナ人夫婦が殺人罪で拘束された。2014年にはロシアがウクライナのクリミナ半島に侵攻により占領してクリミア危機となった。
