第2次世界大戦において、ナチスドイツ軍は最北の内陸国のベラルーシを1941年に侵攻して1944年まで占領した。大戦中にベラルーシ人の死亡者の約4分の1は、爆発・射殺・飢餓ならびに奴隷労働で過労死した。ドイツ軍は地方では民間市民を含め丸ごと焼き払い、射殺、焼殺、公開の絞首刑で虐殺した。
