沖縄戦においては、沖縄本島南部が主戦場となった。北部に取り残された日本軍は沖縄本島の八重岳などの山岳地帯に拠ってアメリカ軍と戦闘した。山岳地帯が制圧された1945年4月22日までに、日本軍は約二千数百名、アメリカ軍は約250名が犠牲者となった。アメリカ軍の衛生兵が戦死した日本兵を探索して死亡の確認をした。
