第2次世界大戦にて、1944年9月8日にドイツ軍はオランダを拠点とするV2ロケットによるロンドン攻撃を開始した。連合国軍は拠点となるオランダに架かる複数の橋を9月17日から確保した。その最後のアーネム橋では、ドイツ軍は一部のイギリス軍が壊滅するなどの激戦をして、最終的には必要性もなくなりアーネム橋は爆破された。弾丸で蜂の巣されたドイツ軍の死体が車外に放り出された。
