ユーゴスラビアの解体により、民族間の紛争が1991年から勃発した。独立したボスニャク人とクロアチア人が分離を目指したセルビア人との間に悲惨な戦闘が約3年半も継続して約20万人も戦死した。1994年4月から北大西洋機構(NATO)がセルビア人に空爆と攻撃が繰り返され、結局は1995年12月4日に2分離連合国家になった。1993年6月に外出した14歳の少年が砲撃に巻き込まれ虐殺された。
