太平洋戦争における沖縄戦が、アメリカ軍と日本軍との最大規模で最後の戦闘となった。沖縄戦は1945年6月20日から6月23日に終結するまでに日本軍は本土のために捨て石となり悲惨に壊滅した。アメリカ軍の全掃討により日本軍兵士は莫大な火炎放射器と爆弾で死傷して最後には集団自決もした。
