太平洋戦争においてアッツ島にて孤立無援となった日本軍兵士は1943年5月12日から5月29日に全滅した。「最後に至らは潔く玉砕し皇国軍人精神の精華を発揮するの覚悟あらんことを望む」大本営から指令された。約2,500名の残兵はアメリカ軍に対して最後のバンザイ攻撃をしてほとんど全員が戦死した。唯一に初めて日本国民に対して日本軍による玉砕と公表した。その後の戦闘は、総員壮烈なる戦死と公表した。
