太平洋戦争の米軍からのグアムの戦闘において1944年8月11日までに日本軍20,810名のうち19,135名(戦死率92.3%)が戦死して全滅した。生き残った兵士はゲリラ戦するも、弾薬、食物も、水も無くなり、銃剣や日本刀しかない。日本兵は銃剣で腹部を切腹して自ら命をたって自決した。
