Dead bodies of Japanese soldiers who were burnt and carbonized by theflame throwers were scattered in the Tarawa atoll at the Pacific War.

太平洋戦争にて1943年11月21日から23日にギルバート諸島のタラワ環礁のペティオ島で、アメリカ軍の戦闘により日本軍の約97%が戦死した。アメリカ軍も膨大な死傷者に達して恐怖と悲劇のタラワと呼称した。立て籠もる日本軍兵士に対して、強力な火炎放射器と爆薬で焼死と爆死させた。火炎放射器により生焼けにされ黒化した日本兵の死体が散乱した。
