第1次世界大戦の西部戦線であるフランス内の国境付近のヴェルダンで、ドイツ軍とフランス軍で1916年2月21日から12月16日までに両軍の激戦により約70万人以上の死傷者が出た。両軍は合図で塹壕から無謀な突撃を何度も繰り返して砲弾と機関銃の掃射で死傷した。ある兵士はレイス周辺の砲火で戦死した。戦況を打開するために、ドイツ軍は毒ガス、イギリス軍の戦車や飛行機の近代兵器を生み出した。
