太平洋戦争の沖縄戦は、米軍の海兵隊の集中的攻撃は1945年6月20日から6月23日に終結した最大激戦地域となった。米軍海兵隊は、銃殺した日本軍兵士をそのまま横目に通り過ぎて侵攻した。日本側の戦死亡者は18万8,136名であり、その内で民間市民は3万8,754名が犠牲者と推定された。終結後の70年目の「平和の礎」には、日本人が22万6,764名、外国人1万7,572名の犠牲者の名簿が記銘された。1972年5月15日に日本に帰属できた。
