英国は1947年8月15日にインドから撤退してインドとパキスタンの分割を公言した。インドはヒンズー教徒とイスラム教徒との宗教戦争により混乱に陥った。ヒンズー教のインドとイスラム教のパキスタンに分割された。イギリスが1860年に東インド会社を設立したコルカタのチトプール通りで、1946年に両教徒が衝突して大虐殺になり、両宗派の教徒の死体をハゲワシが集まり食べ回った。
