人類史上で初めてのマーシャル諸島のエニウェトク環礁で、米国は冷戦でソ連に対抗するため1952年10月31日に水素爆弾を炸裂させた。65トンの核融合の水爆はTNT爆弾で10メガトンに相当した。エニウェトク環礁を壊滅させて、直径3Kmのクレーターが痕跡した。(世界最大の水爆実験はソ連のツァーリ水爆とされ1961年10月31日に100メガトンで広島原爆の3300倍に相当した。)
