第1次世界大戦においてベルギー西部のゾンデンベッケ村は完全に破壊された。そこで連合国軍とドイツ軍が3回もイーペルの激戦が勃発した。ドイツ軍は人類史上最初の最大のイペリットの毒ガスを攻撃をした。1メートルの前進で約20名も戦死する両軍で約50万人もの犠牲者が出た。スコットランドの歩兵隊はドイツ軍の攻撃でほとんど生還できずに戦死した。
