アルメニア人は世界で初めてキリスト教を国家宗教とした。イスラム教のオスマン・トルコ帝国内では虐待された。第一次世界大戦中には帝国内で民族浄化として約150万人ものアルメニア人が虐殺された。1915年4月24日に約250人以上のアルメニア人が捕虜されて処刑されて、洞窟から砂漠には死体で埋め尽くされた。
