アメリカ合衆国内で、1861年から1865年にかけて北部諸州と南部諸州が内戦をした。ゲティスバーグの戦闘で1863年7月4日に南軍の歩兵の約12,500名が北軍に向けて、ピケットの突撃をして悲惨な決戦となった。戦場の約1,200mを突撃した南軍兵士の過半数が自陣に帰還する事なく戦死した。その死体がゲティスバーグの戦場に散乱した。
