リベリア共和国はアメリカ合衆国で解放された黒人奴隷により1847年に建国された。多数の先住民との間で1989年から2003年まで2度の内戦が起きた。内戦により反政府軍 (LURD)から市民の家族が虐殺された。残酷の訴えアメリカ軍の支援を求め、モンロビアの市民らは2003年7月21日にアメリカ大使館前に身内の遺体までも集積した。アフリカ初の選挙で2005年11月23日に女性大統領であるエレン・ジョンソン・サーリーフが選出された。
