第1次世界大戦の西部戦線にて、1916年2月21日から12月16日までフランスのベルダンでフランス軍とドイツ軍が激突する。悲惨な死傷者が続出し約70万人にも達した。障害物のない平地を突破するフランス兵はドイツ軍の機関銃の標的になり多数が戦死した。無理矢理に同数で同質で正面から相互に突破を繰り返させ両軍ともに死傷者が続出した。
