満州事変が1931年9月18日の南満州鉄道の爆破で勃発し、日本の関東軍が満州占領に侵攻した。張学良に任命された馬占山は、1931年11月初旬に日本の関東軍と黒竜江省の大興で激しい戦闘となった。満州の軍団はゲリラ戦で自衛するが多数が戦死した。
